City Centre Active Travel Connections to Interchange Phase 1

High-quality public spaces will be created to enhance the city’s environment and connectivity. At peak times access and loading will be restricted within the city centre to make it easier, more welcoming and safer for pedestrians and more accessible to those with mobility issues.

The works programme will also include permanent and less intrusive hostile vehicle security measures (HVM) as part of a comprehensive safety and security strategy for the city centre.

These improvements will create a lasting legacy by providing a safe, attractive and welcoming pedestrianised environment for all users to enjoy.

City centre improvement works to include:

New high-quality paving materials throughout the scheme area
Continuous level pedestrian route between New Street Station and the retail & business centres
Wider footways, where possible, to provide easier and safer routes for pedestrians
Amended traffic regulation orders (the legal documents required to make changes to the status of the road) to support pedestrian and cycle friendly environments, whilst also managing service vehicle access to residents and businesses.
Replacement of the temporary Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) measures with permanent, less intrusive measures.
Improved and enhanced street lighting, making the area feel safer.
Upgraded street furniture (for example: cycle stands, pedestrian seating, cycle maintenance stand).
Improved wayfinding (route information)

CITY CENTRE HIGHWAYS AND INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS (Active Travel Connections to Interchange Phase 1)

Our team welcomed Cllr Majid Mahmood, Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, to mark the start of our City Centre Active Travel Connections to Interchange Phase 1 project.

To officially kick things off, Cllr Mahmood lifted the first brick on site alongside our Contracts Manager, Jim Walton BEng (Hons), and Project Manager, Phil Jones.
