Project Objectives: St Thomas Bridge spans North to South carrying Baswich Lane over the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. The bridge is a Grade II listed structure and has a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes. Due to the deteriorating condition of the bridge, its assessed load capacity continues to reduce and was already below the signed limit of 7.5 tonne.
Construction details:
- Close bridge and traffic management of the road network
- Replace arch brickwork via intrados side of the arch
- Temporary diversion of Severn Trent water main
- Dive survey of canal walls beneath bridge
- Excavate Bridge deck and infill to the abutment level exposing the extrados surface of the bridge arch
- Construction of reinforced concrete strengthening saddle
- Construct service accommodation for main water mains within bridge saddle
- Re connect water mains
- Construct new alignment kerb line
- Resurface bridge deck
- Re-open bridge
