The bridge was of a brick arch construction and was in a poor condition with large crack in the brick work wingwalls, pilaster and arch barrel. The road surface was settling, and the parapet was missing many coping stones.
The bridge had a 10ton weight limit restricting the size of plant we could use. Additionally, the canal was to remain open to allow boating traffic to continually navigate the canal.
The four wingwalls would be tied to each other by drilling right through the bridge from one side to the other before installing 6 stainless steel tie-bars and pattress plates. Our team would then re-point the vast majority of the brickwork with NHL5 lime mortar and new coping stones made and installed on the parapets.
Our team would then remove the entire road surface and bridge deck. This would involve excavating around live Gas and Water services. A new reinforced concrete support slab would then be installed followed by new kerb drainage and tarmac road surface.
Using specialist scaffolding, drilling rigs and floating plant the scheme was delivered on time and on budget to the delight and satisfaction of both Canal and River Trust and the County Council.
