CPC have been working on and around water since the mid Nineties and as such have gained a vastly experienced workforce.
Fishpond (Crenelated) Weir is located at Woodlesford, Leeds on the Aire & Calder Canal. The function of the weir is to remove excess water from the navigation and send it into the River Aire just upstream of Fishpond Lock. Parts of the apron had failed where the gaps in the surface of the apron allowed water through to attack the foundation of the structure. This caused settlement, which opened more gaps in the apron, which allowed more water through to further erode the foundations.
The weir lies on the off side of the 25m wide canal with no vehicular access. With plant, labour and 200m3 of concrete to place with the canal having to remain navigable there were logistical issues to overcome throughout the Project. The project was completed early and within budget to the full satisfaction of Kier and Canal and River Trust.
Principal Features of the Works
- Partially demolish the existing weir apron
- Underpin the west training wall with mass concrete.
- Reconstruct the demolished sections of the stepped apron using fibre reinforced mass concrete with movement joints
- Backfill scour holes behind west and east training walls with site won concrete material.
- Topsoil and seed over backfill
- Access and Site Compound in connection with the works including the mobilisation of craft and plant.
